Europe is doing away with flimsy plastic bags to save the environment.

The European Parliament has voted to ban plastic bags thinner than 0.05 mm, the most commonly used across the continent. Countries in the EU will either have to cut down annual consumption to 90 bags per person by 2019 or start charging for bags in 2018. Five years ago, a typical European used 180 bags/year.
