Loch/Chemtech's 'Elf' Is Perfect Again in Croatia Tests In the Lab -- and Out
AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- ``The ELF landmine detector aced its third lab test in a row, this time in the independent laboratories of the Rudjer Boskovic Institute in Zagreb, Croatia, then for an encore located and properly identified three buried landmines in a field nearby,' said Mark Baker, CFO for Loch Harris, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: LOCH - news).
KVOA TV Channel 4 in Tucson, Ariz. broke the story in an exclusive bulletin on their 10:00 PM newscast Friday saying, ``The results -- 100 percent success!' Tucson is home for Chemical Detection Technology, Inc. (ChemTech), the Loch Harris subsidiary that developed the ELF.
The Tucson newscast added, ``The system will be tested in Croatia on real landmines in April.' (See it on the Web at kvoa.com , select ``Transcripts,' then ``10:00 PM Friday,' then ``LANDMINE UPDATE.')
Baker said a call Friday from Rodney Boone, CEO for both Loch Harris and ChemTech, reported that there were two lab tests, at 9:00 and 11:00 AM Croatia time; the latter witnessed by Dr. Dijana Plestina, wife of Croatia's newly inaugurated Prime Minister, Ivica Racan, and a group of dignitaries and members of the local media.
A Croatian official said no system had ever achieved perfect results before the ELF tests.
Following the unprecedented results, Boone and Loch/ChemTech's chief scientist Dr. Henry Blair called for an impromptu challenge in the fields near Zagreb.
ELF located and properly identified three landmines within five minutes, as about 50 onlookers, including Croatian media personnel, looked on. The crowd cheered as professional deminers safely and successfully removed each landmine.
Damir Gorseta, head of Croatian Mine Action Centre (CROMAC), was quoted on Croatian television Saturday as saying it was ``a breakthrough in demining.'
Baker also confirmed the report of KVOA TV that full-scale tests in the live minefields of Croatia that had been postponed by extreme winter storms have been rescheduled for April.
``After three successful blind lab tests topped off by a quick three-for-three score in a minefield,' said Baker, ``there is little doubt that our little ELF will do its job.'
ELF, whose name is an acronym for Eliminate Landmines Forever, is described by Dr. Blair as, ``a portable X-ray fluorescent-based, remote sensing optical instrument designed to provide direct, real time discrimination and mapping of unknown landmines from standoff distances of up to 30 meters.'
In its final configuration, ELF will be operated in the field by two persons, one to carry the device and one to operate it.
