Sorry, but there is a long line of tradition for depicting Mohammed in the first way. Check the link for that below. So the question is when it became no no to make pictures of their prophet - and by whom.
With that said, as I read the article - at least in Danish - the clear intention of calling for the (12) drawings was exactly as expressed by you, I quote

"It was protesting the fact that it was difficult for a Danish author to find an illustrator to make sacrilegious drawings for his book about Mohammed".
