I don't know where you get the idea that the Soviets would have preferred to deal with Israel. There is nothing in any history book I've read that gives that impression. In fact, in the atheist Soviet Union, I would imagine a religious state like Israel to be an anathema to the Soviets.......and let's not even get into the subject of the Soviet Jews who were usually complaining about their treatment and wanting to emigrate to Israel.
