Alliant and General Dynamics form munitions propellant joint venture

Associated Press
Wednesday, June 13, 2001

Alliant Techsystems Inc., Hopkins, and General Dynamics have agreed to jointly develop and produce munitions propellant for the U.S. Department of Defense.

Under the deal announced Tuesday, the companies also will operate the Radford Army Ammunition Plant in Radford, Va., the U.S. Army's only munitions propellant
manufacturing facility.

Terms were not disclosed.

The joint venture company, called American Powder Co., will be co-managed by Alliant's ATK Ammunition and Powder Co. of Radford and General Dynamics Ordnance
and Tactical Systems of St. Petersburg, Fla.

Patrick Nolan, president of ATK Ammunition and Powder, will serve as president of the new company.

The companies believe the joint venture will enable them to compete more effectively in the global munitions marketplace, speeding development and production of new
propellants.

ATK Ammunition and Powder is the largest supplier of ammunition propellant to the Defense Department and a major producer of commercial and military smokeless
powder. The company's propellants are used in tank ammunition, medium-caliber ammunition, artillery propelling charges, and tactical rocket motors.

General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems produces more than 120 types of Ball Powder Propellant for all segments of law enforcement, industrial and sporting
ammunition industries and various military applications in addition to ammunition and supplies and related services.
