CRTC approves Bell's ADSL access service

On October 9, 1997, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) approved Bell Canada's July 31, 1997 proposal to provide high-speed residential ADSL access capability to Internet Service Providers and corporations with telework programs. The service will be made available to service providers and corporations in the Qu‚bec City and Ottawa areas effective Oct. 21,1997.

With ADSL, Bell reafirms its commitment to introduce innovative new products and services, and to enable ISPs, corporations and consumers to more fully benefit from emerging multimedia content and applications. Bell's ADSL access service allows information to be sent over existing copper telephone lines at speeds of up to 2.2 Mbps(megabits per second) -- 50 times faster than a standard (28.8 kilobits per second) dial-up modem.

With the explosive growth of the Internet and teleworking, residential consumers are demanding much faster data access to their homes than was previously possible with existing copper telephone lines. Bell's ADSL access service satisfies this demand.

Bell plans to rollout service to other cities in 1998. Bell is also evaluating the potential for a future business ADSL service in 1998.

Bell is currently working closely with a number corporations to
develop plans for ADSL-based teleworking solutions. Bell is
also working with ISPs in the development of high-speed internet to-the-home solutions for consumers
