VANCOUVER — An arm of the Iranian government has said it wants to cancel agreements relating to the Mehdiabad zinc project with Union Resources Ltd. of Australia, Union's 19.9 per cent owner Lundin Mining Corp. said Friday.

Union received a letter from Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization to terminate formation, basic, management and engineering services agreements.

“Union is of the opinion that IMIDRO has invalidly issued the purported notice of termination and the board of Union is taking urgent steps to clarify and resolve the situation and ascertain the impact of the letter on Union's investment in the project,” Lundin said in a release.

Union holds 38 per cent ownership in the zinc-lead deposit Mehdiabad in Iran. The Iranian State owns 50 per cent of the project and Itok 12 per cent.
