I think the real effect of the Dukakis-in-the-tank photo was to convey graphically tht Dukakis simply didn't get it. He was just another, out-of-touch Massachusetts liberal trying to masquerade as someone who was cool. Bush on the carrier deck he was not.

I can see the same thing happening with Kerry, who is trying too damn hard to be the everyman's uber-mensch. It wears thin, and the more he's in the public eye, the more people will tire of him. The picture only serves as a graphic reminder that Kerry is trying too hard.
