re: GbE/10GbE Ethernet in the first mile (EFM),

The July 2001 Cook Report on Internet cookreport.com contains two excellent interviews on Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM), conducted with Howard Frazier [ex-Cisco, now-Dominet] and WorldWidePacket's Jonathan Thatcher, two of the lead principals in the EFM study group.

10 GbE is discussed sporadically throughout, along with three variations of outside plant (Ethernet over UTP, P-P Fiber, and P-MP Fiber PONs, or EPONs).

The implications to the greater 'Net's backbone, and other architectural opportunities/implications, are also discussed.

I expect that the executive summaries of these intereviews will be posted in a day or two at: cookreport.com
