WHEN IT COMES TO THE POWER CRISIS...

JOHN C. WILLIAMS AND ASSOCIATES SAYS FEDERAL AND STATE POLITICIANS FAIL TO SEE THE BIG PICTURE WHEN IT COMES TO THE POWER CRISIS

"New Power Plants and Transmission Lines Provide Band-Aid Approach To Power Crisis In California

SAN MATEO, CA (May 11, 2001) - John C. Williams & Associates, Inc., a leading provider of environmental consulting services, today criticized federal and state plans to build new power plants and transmission lines in order to solve the power crisis in California and the rest of the United States.

"The Bush administration has focused on only one aspect of the current power crisis, and that is the generation of more power. They have completely failed to look at the broader economic and environmental issues that the energy crisis in California has revealed, which is the fact that we have not planned for sustainable development," said John Williams, president and CEO of John C. Williams & Associates, Inc. "Building new power plants and transmission lines does nothing to solve the bigger problem. We need to look at ways that improve the efficiency of power generation by our existing power plants and ways to dramatically increase utilization efficiency of that power by end users in order to ensure a sustainable and renewable energy source, now and in the future."

Williams added that the current power crisis is just the tip of the iceberg. The world's population is expected to double by the year 2050. This means that in order to maintain our current standard of living we need to double the world's entire human support infrastructure in just 50 years or less.

"If we have twice as many people to support and care for, we will need to increase, by a factor of two, every home, office, library, schoolroom, college, university, municipal service, health facility, bridge, airport, and freeway as well as food, clothing and primary means of production, energy generation and transportation systems on earth. This problem goes far beyond just doubling our ability to generate more power," Williams added. "In the United States alone, it has taken hundreds of years to build our current infrastructure and now we are faced with having to double that in only 50 years. The energy crisis is only the beginning and the amazing thing is that many of our national leaders fail look at or deal effectively with the broader issues of sustainable development."

Williams believes that in order to respond effectively to current energy needs we must do so intelligently, not in a crisis or panic mode.

"Only through comprehensive planning leading to sustainable natural resource development and conservation do we have even an appreciable chance of accomplishing what needs to be done in the time we have to accomplish it," said Williams."
