Tim,

>>By year's end, Compaq Computer Corp. will develop and standardize its basic input/output system (BIOS) on all of its portable lines as a way to provide uniformity, ease of configuration, and direct support for corporate IS managers.

That's a line of bull if I have ever heard it. The problem with BIOS is that is is always changing! USB comes along and you need a new BIOS. The new ATAPI (Advanced Technology Attachment Packet Interface) comes along and you need a new BIOS. Intel comes out with a MXM chip and you need a new BIOS.

When a company (such as PTEC or any other for that matter) already has crunch the code for the upgrade why does CPQ or IBM for that matter want to do it also when they can buy it for a fraction of the development cost. It doesn't make sense to me and the stockholders of CPQ for that matter to duplicate efforts of other companies.

"I'm pleased to see Compaq use Phoenix software to enable their entry into the emerging high volume consumer segment of the notebook market," said Tim Bajarin, president, Creative Strategies, Inc. "When you couple robust multimedia capabilities, fast Pentium processors, and affordable prices, with the Compaq name and support, this should be a real winner!"
Phoenix's NoteBIOS 4.0 provides the Compaq Presario 1000 with advanced system level functionality including automatic configuration of IDE hard disk drives.

>>Why did Compaq start a NEW relationship with Phoenix only a
month after they kicked out Systemsoft and said that they wanted
to standardize across all their lines and use their own BIOS???

The only answer that I can give is that they needed Phoenix.
I hope they need them even more in the future! <g>
