U.S. military officials wouldn't say how many U.S. soldiers were involved in the mission, but spokesman Maj. Bryan Hilferty said it was the first large-scale combat operation for the allies since Anaconda, in early March.

Harradine wouldn't offer many details of the mission, but made clear that it was a high-risk one. He said there had been no allied casualties but wouldn't comment on whether there had been any contact with al-Qaida or Taliban troops.

Harradine said the mission aimed to make sure the allied troops can work together.

"When we arrived, it was clear that the war against Afghanistan was not yet over - the hunt for al-Qaida and Taliban goes on," said Brig. Roger Lane,
