For the most part, class action suits are attempts by smaller percentage shareholders to get the attention of the board and the chairman - particularly if they're emotionally involved and have large portions of their portfolio tied around the company. CA's silence is indeed, curious, given the circumstances.

The winners in class-actions are the attorneys because the procedings (there's a poor choice of words!) are soooooo loooonnnngggggg. The biggest losers are usually the stockholders, since their investment dwindles in value during the delay. The winners are almost always the CEO and senior executives who have already cashed in at various points along the way and are pretty much set for life by this point in a company's history. I'd be surprised (and alarmed) if Mr. W. and company aren't carrying protection insurance against this kind of thing. Nasty business, but all too typical, I'm afraid.
