Let's Debate by Abdul Hamid Ahmad, Editor in Chief gulfnews.com Why did an editor choose to publish offensive material knowing fully that it will provoke the anger of millions of people? Can he be blamed for the innocent blood that was shed during the protests against the publication of the offensive cartoons? These legitimate questions are on the minds of many. And should be debated, albeit in a civilized way, with the aim of reaching an understanding among cross-cultural intellectuals over what we believe is the central issue; where do the limits of freedom of expression lie? Should there be a limit to what can be published, particularly with regard to the sanctity of religious, cultural or social beliefs? notice the debate is not about whether a mob should burn down an embassy We encourage and welcome such debate. We condemn any violent expression of opinions. Thus Gulf News invites editors of newspapers from across the world, intellectuals and readers, to send us their views and engage in a debate on the issue. We will publish them as long as they abide by our tradition of respecting everyone's opinion in a civilised and courteous manner in the hope that we in the media reach a universal understanding on what constitutes freedom of expression vis a vis offensive text and images.
