Toshiba lowers boom on notebook, PC prices <Picture: --------------------------------------------------------->By John G. Spooner, PC Week Online 01.06.98 6:16 pm ET <Picture> Toshiba America Information Systems Inc.'s Computer Systems Division today announced broad price reductions of more than 26 percent on notebook and desktop models.
Citing reductions in the cost of components, Toshiba cut prices on nearly 20 models in its Satellite, Satellite Pro, Portege and Tecra notebook lines.
The biggest reduction came on the Tecra 740CDT, configured with an Intel Corp. 166MHz Pentium Processor with MMX Technology, 13.3-inch TFT (thin film transistor) display, 16MB of RAM and 2GB hard drive. The price of the system dropped 26.6 percent from $4,499 to $3,299, Toshiba officials said.
The company's Satellite Pro 456CDX, featuring a 166MHz Intel Pentium with MMX processor, 12.1-inch active matrix "fast scan" display, 32MB of RAM and 2GB hard drive, was reduced by 20 percent from $2,499 to $1,999.
Toshiba's Portege 660CDT, configured with a 150MHz Intel MMX Pentium processor, 11.3-inch TFT screen, 16MB of RAM and 1.35GB hard drive, was reduced 20 percent from $2,499 to $2,199.
Toshiba cut prices on its Infinia desktop systems by as much as 22 percent.
The company's Infinia 7230, which includes a 233MHz Pentium MMX processor, 64MB of RAM, 6.4GB hard drive and 24-speed CD-ROM, was reduced 22 percent from $1,799 to $1,399.
The Infinia 7260, with a 266MHz Pentium II processor, was reduced 10 percent from $1,999 to $1,799, officials said.
