China's First DVD Maker to Start in June

January 7, 1998 (SHANGHAI, China) -- China's first digital
videodisk (DVD) production line is expected to begin
operation in Shanghai in June.

Based on a loan from the World Bank, the Shanghai Golden Image CD
Corp. plans to start the production line in cooperation with foreign
companies. Various manufacturers are bidding for the right to operate
the production line.

The DVD line can also be used for producing CDs, VCDs, and
CD-ROMs, said Wang Hao, deputy director of the National
Engineering Research Center. He added that the popularity of DVDs
will help promote development of digital audio and video products.

Some of China's manufacturers have already begun research and
development on digital TV sets, and a Hangzhou-based company is the
first in the country to produce digital TVs.
