Intel to open center in Gaza Strip Mark LaPedus EE Times (02/20/2006 5:09 PM EST) SAN JOSE, Calif. — Semiconductor giant Intel Corp. is planning to build a technology education center in the volatile Gaza Strip within the Palestine territories, according to the Associated Press. The Intel Information Technology Center of Excellence is intended to provide IT training to Palestinians, according to the report. The center is being developed in conjunction with the American Near East Refugee Aid organization and the Islamic University of Gaza. Intel’s center, the company's first large project in the Palestinian territories, will be staffed by Palestinians. It will be located near Gaza City in an area that is targeted to become a new technology park. Construction will be completed next year. The facility will cost about $1 million, according to the report. The Gaza Strip is a narrow coastal strip of land in the Middle East. It is not currently recognized internationally as a part of any sovereign country. The Strip is under the jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority. The official Palestinian position is that the territory remains under military occupation, and that Israel holds the status of occupying power. The Israeli government disputes this, especially after the withdrawal of Israel in 2005. Meanwhile, Intel has poured billions of dollars in Israel. Last year, the company announced it plans to build a chip making facility for ICs on 300-mm diameter wafers at its site in Kiryat Gat, Israel. This was expected after confirmation that Intel would receive $525 million in the form of subsidies, tax exemptions and discounts, towards the overall cost of $3.5 billion was given by the Israeli government.
