If you're using Win95 or Win98....push the Ctrl-Alt-Delete keys concurrently...that should bring up your Task Manager screen....click on each listed running program and highlight it one at a time.. then click on end task...it might take a minute or two for the highlighted task to "end"....do all the listed programs....I usually leave systray and explorer alone, others shut them off also.

Then try scan disk

This is in case you don't want to download and unzip the end it all file.
