08:35 ET Housing Starts stronger than expected
Housing Starts surprised the market with a small 0.2% increase in January; a decline had been expected after the strongest level of starts in 15 years seen in December. However, permits fell 5.6% to a 1.781 mln rate, a bit below the 1.80 mln consensus. The divergence between starts and permits might indicate that weather was a factor behind the starts strength, though even if weather was a factor, it is clear that the underlying trend in housing is still very strong.
