By the way, in reading the details of the new budget agreement, it seems that they have changed the definition of "long-term" for capital gains to 18 months from the current 12 months. The new definition takes effect 7/28/97 (retroactively when the provision is signed into law). As a result, anyone who sold for a gain on Tuesday an asset held less than 18 months will be paying taxes as if the gain were regular income. Might want to check when you bought if you plan to sell for a gain anytime soon.
