I think the split in the (D) party is less serious than the split in the (R)'s. The split in the (D) party has been with us since McGovern, or maybe earlier. It's between moderate and liberal (D)'s. The John's and the metacomets's! The (D)'s actually have a functional 'big tent'.

The split with the (R)'s is newer and more serious. They're ALL conservative. It's the Tea Partiers and the moderate (R)'s that want to elect a president, not just make a statement. The TP types have deluded themselves into thinking they're a majority, thanks to conservative media.

I think if Jeb or Kasich gets the nod, a LOT of TP types will stay home. They may hate (R)'s like McConnell and Boehner even more than they hate liberals. They see them as traitors.
