Well, they would have to have a search warrant specifying I have an unregistered copy of WinFax Pro to search my PC right? :)

Let's try this example, if there was a serial murderer or rapist living in your town keeping an encrypted spreadsheet of his/her activities - or exchanging encrypted emails with some other psycho-misfit across the country. The only thing that stands in the way of a guaranteed conviction is if the government can open these files and read the plain text.

Somehow I couldn't look into the eyes of a loved one and explain that their life would have to stay in possible danger because this person's privacy needs to be protected from Big Brother. Imagine explaining that! Sorry, the need for privacy outweighs your life.

Ok, extreme yes. Could it happen? I think it does everyday.

Again, I'm not saying your are wrong at all. I do think protecting privacy needs to be addressed. I am afraid of allowing blanket access to my personal files on my PC at home to anyone. I just think there needs to be a firm "line" where we say how much is enough.

We could argue until death about where that "line" exists without each feeling content - hopefully, the bright minds of our world can find a liveable solution for us all :)
