I was in the 4th grade during the Ike/Stevenson campaign. There was an Ike campaign office 4 blocks away and we (about 6 neighborhood kids) used to go in and get loaded up with all the give-aways: "I Like Ike" hats, banners, flags, buttons, and T-shirts. We would then parade up and down Wilshire Blvd in L.A. yelling at motorists and anyone else urging them to vote for Ike. My parents were democrats voting for Stevenson but they encouraged us to express ourselves anyway.

I doubt my 4th-grade grandson would be allowed to venture 4 blocks away from home by himself, nevermind march up and down a main boulevard.
