My wife's pension is high enough that if I die first, she would collect $0 of my SS benefit after deducting/etc. per SS rules... has always been part of the equation for us and why we have other income streams such as the farmland (rented out to co-partner cousin -- as well as my brother) to farm in OH and Mich. orchards and hardwoods, mineral rights (not huge, but not zero either) in Mich... I take diversification seriously hoping it will help us should one thing or another go completely to hell at the worst time for us... all but the vacation 2nd homes are our final line of defense for worst case healthcare bills... Vacation properties stay in the family...hope the kid can afford the yearly taxes, etc., or she'll have to rent our 4-season place out, or live in it -- still deciding if I want to be that dad who foolishly tried to control kid from grave and make it so she can't sell the 100-yr. old family place... but then realize if things get/got that bad, likely the last thing she'd have left at that point and would rather she use it to get through a hard time than be flat broke while being saddled with home ownership... but then I think... and so on... she knows nothing is written in stone and no promises she'll get anything beyond the 4-yr degree we paid for and she got.
