Toy, you know the wiring from the keyboard through the directory much better than me, but you aren't as aware of how the biometric systems have developed.

First, any half-decent scanner is already equipped with enough sensors to be more than sure that a live finger has been presented. There are several technologies adapted from medicine that are in use. So please don't worry about that scenario.

Second, the biometrics companies are about ready to introduce biometric smart cards already loaded with PKI technology, and encrypted from the point the finger is presented. The fingerprint will act as the digital signature for the digital certificate.

Finally, there is already at least one pilot in Australia with a biometric-access VPN, with policy-based access. I believe there are also audit trails, but that's only based on the fact that the biometric partner has installed audit trail biometrics elsewhere.

As for stepping away . . . possible, but these companies also have screen saver locks that can be set like any screen savers interval. Carelessness and deceit are just about undefendable, but the biometric technology is pretty far along already.
