04/08/97 Many CompuServe users dislike AOL

A Computerworld survey of 107 current CompuServe subscribers finds
that most of them are happy with their current service and many have
great concerns about a merger between America Online, Inc. and CompuServe
Corp.
Rumors surfaced last week regarding a possible America Online buyout
of the Columbus, Ohio, online service; press reports this week have
indicated that the pair are moving closer to an agreement.
When asked their perception of CompuServe as a company, 74% of the
current subscribers said that they had a "Very Good" or "Excellent"
perception. Their perception of Dulles, Va.-based America Online was
dramatically different: 82% of those surveyed said their impression
of that online service was either "Poor," "Not Very Good" or "Fair."
A majority of the CompuServe subscribers, 62%, also said they would
have a "Negative" or "Somewhat Negative" feeling if America Online
and CompuServe merged. Most of those surveyed said that they had planned
to stay with CompuServe before the acquisition rumors started, but
now they aren't so sure. More than 67% of those surveyed said they
had planned to continue using the service. However, 46% said that
if America Online were to buy CompuServe, they might changes their
plans to use the company's service during the next 12 months.
