Who shot JR--> I am not really sure of the exactness of any ones opinion of this matter, but the closer the spread the better..or less volatile. Wide spreads scare people away. With a tight spread a "trader" can feel better when he buys a stock that the spread won't kill him when he sells. Maybe the MM's want to buy shares, maybe they want to sell shares, it is a very difficult thing to figure out on the spot, and is usually just a guess.

Maybe someone with a little more knowledge on the subject could give a better answer. sorry I know this probably was more confusing than helpful
