Louis,
I don't think anyone has all the answers to your questions. What makes me feel Geron will be in the forefront of telomere technology is their scientific advisory board. All the big names in this area are on their board and I imagine Geron has agreements with them to benefit from their findings - e.g., what Elizabeth Blackburn comes up with in her forthcoming publication.
In any case, Geron still looks like a good gamble and it was recommended recently by Michael Murphy in Business Week.
