Dave, I want to thank you for starting this discussion group. Finally,here's a place where we can find intelligent discussion regarding our investment dollars in broadband. I'm not sure I understand all the technical terms and acronyms, but I have learned a lot by reading the posts.

Slightly OT, if ADSL or its variants are not the magic bullet for the RBOCs, what are their options? I believe I read that one impediment they have to simply putting in bigger pipes into everyone's house, is that they are legally required to allow access through these pipes to competitors. If this is the case, it would explain why they are hardly rushing to build infrastructure at the local level i.e.,why incur the cost when your competitors can take advantage of it.

Assuming the above is true, it seems to me they are in a difficult position if ADSL proves inadequate. Following this train of thought, it would appear that cable has a strategic advantage. It would also appear logical that the telcos might be forced to acquire/merge with the cable companies if they are to preserve their franchise.
