Seahawks re-sign WR Sean Dawkins July 24, 2000
CHENEY, WASHINGTON (TICKER) -- One month after he was waived due to salary cap constraints, wide receiver Sean Dawkins is back with the Seattle Seahawks.
Coach Mike Holmgren said after practice on Sunday that Dawkins has agreed to return and the team officially announced the signing today.
  Financial terms were not disclosed.
Despite leading the team in receiving yards last season, Dawkins was released in June to clear close to $2 million under the salary cap to help the team sign free agent linebacker George Koonce and first-round pick Shaun Alexander.
The move was somewhat surprising since the Seahawks had traded receiver Joey Galloway to Dallas for a pair of first-round picks. Seattle later released veteran Mike Pritchard, leaving Derrick Mayes as the team's only reliable receiver.
The team has high hopes for second-year player Karsten Bailey, who did not catch a pass in his rookie season, and rookie Darrell Jackson, a third-round pick out of Florida
Dawkins, 29, caught 58 passes for a team-leading and career-best 992 yards and seven touchdowns in his only season with the Seahawks. A big target at 6-4, Dawkins became an instant favorite of quarterback Jon Kitna, who pushed hard for his return.
A first-round pick in 1993, Dawkins spent his first five seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. After catching a career-high 68 passes in 1997, Dawkins signed as a free agent with the New Orleans Saints.
In his only year with the Saints, Dawkins had 53 receptions for 823 yards and one touchdown before signing with Seattle.
Dawkins has 362 receptions for 5,326 yards in 108 games. |
