There are different types and colors of Garnet. I believe Mohs hardness scale of 7. Diamond being a 10. The hardest mineral know on earth, last I knew. Most unworthy of faceting are made into things like sandpaper. If I remember right. Deep red non inclusion garnets are worthy of faceting and a precious gemstone. Clean flawless garnets are rare (green)therefore precious IMO. The steam would be a good place to start looking as the earth is already cut away.
