RESEARCH ALERT - Merrill raises Callaway

NEW YORK, Oct. 21 (Reuters) - Merrill Lynch said Friday it has raised its rating on Callaway Golf Co. , which makes and sells golf clubs and balls, to near-term accumulate from neutral.

-- Merrill said its long-term rating stays at accumulate. The brokerage said its 1999 earnings per share target is $0.75 and its 2000 target is $1.15 for the company. Merrill Lynch said it is raising its third-quarter earnings per share estimate to $0.22 from $0.20.

-- Merrill Lynch said earnings are poised to accelerate over the next 12 to 18 months with a new golf ball launch in February 2000 and restructuring programs that will bolster margins.

-- "ELY's business appears to be improving by all measures," Merrill Lynch wrote in a research report. "Excess inventory situation at retail appears to be resolved and market acceptance of new products has been strong. Callaway has regained lost market share."

-- Merrill Lynch said the third quarter appears to be on track and the company should see 5 percent top-line growth.

-- Shares of Callaway rose 15/16 on the New York Stock Exchange to 13 in the early morning.
