Compaq, Novell In Internet Security Software Pact
Updated 1:27 PM ET September 7, 1999

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Compaq Computer Corp. and Novell Inc. Tuesday said they agreed to a deal to make Novell's directory services software for managing and controlling access to computer networks run on high-powered equipment using Compaq's version of Unix software.

Compaq and Novell said the deal expanded ties between the two companies to make Novell Directory Services (NDS) software an integral part of Compaq's high-powered line of Tru64 UNIX computers for running key business operations. Compaq is positioning these systems as capable of replacing mainframes.

After the announcement, shares of Novell jumped 1-1/8 to 25-1/16 in active Nasdaq trading. Compaq fell back 3/16 to 23-1/8 on the New York Stock Exchange.

The pact builds on a 14-year relationship between Compaq, the world's leading supplier of personal computers, and Novell, a top maker of software used to manage computer networks, in which the companies have worked with each other to build products to manage networks of personal computers.

Novell's directory services software enables companies to manage and authenticate the identity of vast numbers of computer users on an organization's networks, boosting security against unauthorized network intrusion.

Novell boasts that NDS is the Holy Grail of Internet security because it requires computer users to type in a single password to sign on to any computer, reducing the confusing proliferation of computer security passwords needed for access to different systems.

The deal calls for Novell to make its directory software run on Compaq's Tru64 UNIX operating system. Compaq will also enhance its Unix-based line of ProLiant-brand servers to run Novell directory software. By building Novell's NDS into Compaq's computer systems, customers will automatically be able to manage computer networks running a mixture of software such as Windows NT, IBM mainframe, Linux and Novell Netware.
