Bush never used the term imminent threat. He said we shouldn't wait until Saddam became an imminent threat, because then it would be too late.

As to your rhetorical questions, "When the blooming heck would the US or the UN or Iran and Israel for that matter have simply turned their back on Saddam? Under what ridiculously impossible conditions would the world simply have stood by?",

Europe and the rest of the world turned their backs and simply stood by in the '30's while Hitler gained power and toppled country after country.

Chirac himself is at the top of Saddam's bribery list. You don't suppose that might be why France opposed the sanctions and taking out Saddam, do you? Nahhhh...
