re: Would the flash on the Hybrid drive be NAND or NOR?

NAND, of course.

About 15 years ago a very similar approach was introduced for high performance disk controllers (Digital's Storageworks for Alpha and VAX computers) in order to speed up reads and writes while reducing load on the physical drive and keeping good data reliability (no data loss in case of power failure or other problems).

Every controller (8 drives) was equipped with 128-512 MB of RAM memory, powered by a battery.

The current samsung/microsoft approach is very primitive, just a beginning.
Eventually *all* digital storage will be some sort of solid state.
P.S. Flash is already cheaper than Dram..
