Jack you are fully correct in that to gain all the advantages of Active Directory, your workstations will need to be upgraded to Windows2000. There's no backwards compatibility here - Microsoft doesn't believe in that anymore :) You can use other versions of Windows in your Windows2000 environment but you won't get the functionality of Active Directory.

In my thoughts I make assumptions that the market segment that MSFT already "owns" would stay with MSFT and it's upcoming product and not move to another OS choice for their servers. I thought this would be a fair assumption. I could be wrong :)

And I'm with you, the marketplace doesn't really understand what it will take to migrate to the new version of NT. But you can bet your last dollar that MSFT will tell that it's real easy and you'll get alot of benefit when you do :)

Also, I've been told that current Microsoft Certified Systems Engineers (MCSEs) will have to take the complete new Windows2000 track to become certified or to maintain their status as MCSEs. For comparision, Novell has had a plan implemented that allows current Certified Novell Engineers (CNEs) to sit one class (usually refered to as an "Update" class), pass one test and maintain their status.

As a technical education center, this is being viewed as great for business but bad for public relations. How do we make the current crop of wanna-be MCSEs happy when they find out their sitting in "obsolete" classes? Yes, they really aren't obsolete but people don't think that way. They are paying alot of $$$$ to gain this status only to find out that in 6 months, their hard won status is not "cutting edge" and to regain that "cutting-edge" they will need to do it all over again? Yeah, great for business :)
