I don't think you need to bring that in as an explanation. There was a similar case in Edmonton earlier this year. Guy has an electronics store that's been broken into three times, his insurance company has warned him that they're not so keen on him as a customer any more. So he takes to sleeping in his store with a shotgun. One day at 3:00 a.m. a stolen SUV drives through the (reinforced) front door of the store, and two guys hop out to load a big screen TV. The owner apprehends them, and is charged for having the gun.

It's simply that they don't want you to defend yourself. Join the ranks of the exalted victim, fine, but don't defend yourself.
