What I have found is that it runs on a schedule as you set it.. First thing it does is to verify your database against the one to be downloaded.. If it is as current as the one to be downloaded, nothing happens..

Mind you, until recently I had disabled the scheduler.. And periodically was downloading myself.. Even then, the process is same.. It quickly checks and gives you a message if no download is required..

Note.. Thanks for mentioning AVG here before.. That is what got me interested and on my PC.. Incidentally, although a comparison here mentioned AVG not catching all the viruses, it has save my ass on two occassions now.. Almost like being mugged in a dark alley.. where one should not venture.. :o)
