Addi...will you please read post # 8886 on the Intel thread. It is a post by Michael Cummings who has pasted an article from ZDNET that discusses the regrets early NC buyers are having. Could you please read his post and comment ?
Also thanks for the whole philosophical digression (man on the moon) and here's my response. Paradigm shifts in technology doesn't happen over night. At this point, all the potential benefits of the NC just do not significantly outweigh the negative aspects of the PC. Please don't tell me about imagination, I have always been accused of having a wild imagination. When I read posts about consumers (as in the home) buying NC's because it is cheaper and easier to use...this is simply not correct. I gave NC's for what it's worth but using the wildest imagination still doesn't convince me the slightest possibility of NC's taking over PC.
Here's my prediction: As more and more processing power is required...e.g. 3D rendering, videoconferencing, internet telephony, or whatever other tasks that requires heavy duty processing power, hardware/software upgrades will be necessary. This bodes well for SUN servers (which is the main reason why I invested in SUNW) and PC hardware mfgs. But the biggest problem with PC's is that it is difficult to use for the many would be users. Imagine when they (maybe MSFT and INTC)take PC's to the next level, a level that is very user friendly to even a person who has never used PC's before, maybe something like the in wall home computers in the movie DEMOLITION MAN.
Therefore, NC's are not necessarily the ideal paradigm to take us to the next level. There are still many unanswered questions about how NC's will be exactly implemented. All that I see is a working concept and no one seems to have acceptable anwsers to my questioning in the validity of NC's. All that I hear is that it is cheap and easy to use...uh so what ?? It's not hard to modify PC's do perform the functions of NC's at a cheaper cost (again read post 8886 on the intel thread). In fact, it would be easier to argue that NC's is just a de-evolving process going back to mainframe/dumb terminal computing.
Maybe NC's is not the same as dinosaur computing but for what it will be used for, I think PC's can do the same thing. We all have had our problems with PC's but that will change. Therefore, Addi, in your imagination, NC's will be the preferred model for computing because you have discounted the fact that PC's can be modified to work like an NC. In my rebuttal, I argue that PC's will not go away anytime soon because they will bring it to a level where it is extremely userfriendly, however, more powerful at the same time to handle tasks that require more processing power.
