The British internet provider X-stream Network is setting up a free internet service in Sweden in cooperation with the electronics retail chain Onoff. X-stream Network is the third largest company in Britain to offer customers free internet access and it has 500,000 registered users. In Sweden, the company hopes to attract 200,000 users during the first 12 months.

X-Stream Network's rivals not only include other providers of free internet services such as Spray, Bip, and Utfors, but also telecommunications companies such as government-owned Telia. X-stream Network believes that it will capture market share principally from Telia. The Scandinavian market is interesting for X-stream Network as it is well developed and better prepared for e-commerce than the British market. X-stream Network launched a Norwegian site last week, the Swedish site will be launched today, and there are plans for a French site. All these sites will be managed from Stockholm.
