Dean spent his so quickly because he made a bad deal with Trippi--gave Trippi's companies contracts to spend whatever money he raised, and take 15% off the top as their cut in return for not paying Trippi a salary. Dean was a nobody then, and didn't have much to lose from it. He ended up getting a few exciting months in the sun in return.
