For the past 20 years, I have put campaign finance reform and getting rid of gerrymandering as my main goals in the US politics. When you manage to make that stick, everything else will fall in place. Until then you have corrupt politicians on both sides kowtowing to their rich overlords.

You can't fix a system that is not accountable to the people. Fix that part and everything else will fall in place.
