OT: EMC DGN purchase reasons Actually the main reason EMC bought DGN was to get the people. EMC is growing at a torrid pace and is adding thousands of engineers per year. DGN had a rich pool of engineering and programming talent which was sitting just down the road from EMC. Rumor had it that SUNW was eyeing DGN for the same reason but EMC got to them first. The secondary reason for the acquisition was the CLARiiON product line which gave EMC a fast entry into the NAS and midrange (sub-terabyte) storage market. The third reason was DGN's NUMA (Non-Uniform Memory Architecture) expertise. The server business was part of the baggage which they've pretty much pushed off into its own corner. NUMA is key to the enterprise storage network opportunity, however, and after IBM grabbed SQNT EMC was wise to move quickly on DGN.
