Dear Tiguer and all: Looks like SUNW and MSFT are now partners. Guess we ought to be more polite. Incidentally, GBLX will probably buy it up anyhow eventually. JDN

Sun Microsystems & Microsoft invest in same co-WSJ

NEW YORK, Feb 23 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. <MSFT.O> and Sun Microsystems Inc. <SUNW.O> have each taken a $25 million stake in start-up company BroadBand Office Inc., in what executives said is the first time the rival giants have invested in the same new company, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

San Mateo, Calif.-based BroadBand Office aims to deliver high-speed telecommunications and computer services to large office complexes and has close ties to landlords such as Equity Office Properties Trust <EOP.N> and Carr America Realty Corp.

BroadBand Office was founded in July by venture-capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers and commercial landlords. The company said it would spend more than $100 million this year to wire office buildings with fiber-optic lines through which it will offer telephone service, high-speed Internet access and business software.

Sun's $25 million investment is its largest since it began investing in start-ups in June.
