Jefferson, who was noted himself for being a magnificent rider, said that Washington had the greatest seat in America. His taste for appearing mounted in the nick of time created the idea of "a man on horseback." Washington lost so many battles (but the last) that a good horse (and seat) was a necessity, not a luxury.
