Your attack on Edison was small minded, jealous and simply wrong. In the absence of his genius, I felt called upon to descant his virtues, while not denying his wrongs. Any man, however small, deserves no less. Any man, however great, need not be denied his rightful tribute. No one is responsible for the drivel written about by comics like Terrence.
It is usually counted cowardice to criticize someone dead or not in the room -- de mortuis nihil nisi bonum -- about the dead -- nothing but good. Cowardly, because were the victim in the room, the libeler would be called to account him whose honour was besmirched. I forgive you for your mindless ill-will toward Edison. He was so great a man that I forget whether he had any faults or not. He can well survive your contumely, and doesn't need my encomium. The problem is that you by your childish reply have attacked my honour. Beware. I don't take insults from rural ostlers lightly. I am a crack shot with any known make of firearm at up to 1,000 yards. I have many medals and nolle prosses to prove this. I am available at the crack of dawn at any windblown field in any city of the world within a week. Farewell.
