BEIJING, Jan 19 Asia Pulse - Production and sales in China's electronics and information industries soared in 1997.
The increase in domestic computers was 38.2 percent; color televisions, 14.6 percent; and video compact disc ( VCD ) players, 300 percent.
Statistics released by China's Ministry of Electronics Industry show that many Chinese-made electronic products now dominate the domestic market.
To date, 57% of the color TV market is claimed by Changhong, Konka, Panda and TCL. Domestic VCD players have 81% of the market share.
The computer market is also dominated by Chinese manufacturers such as Legend and Great Wall. The two Chinese computer giants took 60% of the domestic market last year.
Program-controlled switchboards made in China appeared on the international market last year while their role at home was even larger.
The output of the electronics industry in 1997 is estimated at 380 billion yuan, up 24.9% over 1996. The industry made 12 billion yuan in profits, up 13.2 percent. These figures were announced at the recent annual meeting of the Ministry of Electronics Industry.
The ministry is estimating electronic exports will be valued at US$25 billion for 1997 when all the figures are in.
New breakthroughs have been reported in restructuring enterprises.
Mergers were completed by such groups as Changhong, Konka, TCL and Hisense which brought together enterprises in different regions or involved in different businesses.
Mergers also took place between state-owned enterprises and competitive township businesses as well as other collectively owned ones. The Haier Group and Xihu Electronics Group merged last year, for example, combining to gain competitive advantages in the market.
