I have no detailed information on the exact content of the base stations, but earlier the volumes
of base stations were not large enough to use really custom designs, or the other way,
one could use fairly standard DSP-chips. Obviously not that critical to minimize
neither footprint, power consumption nor number of surrounding chips.

However, that is not true anymore, but the software/firmware must still be easily upgradable,
(all) cannot be embedded deep in the sillycone and much more horsepower is needed than in
a handset

Note that the "tweek" is not based on a new process, and also note that base stations
have to fulfill very tough, extreme temperature, etc variations, very high reliablity, etc.
(which is the opposite to overclocking an AMD with extra cooling, elephant-fans, etc, running
some operating system which anywy crashes every now and then)

But it is always nice to get some extra cycles for an upgrade or the next version.

FCC probably has some internal pictures...

Now, why is it that a 2GHz Pentium cannot produce compressed digital video on the fly??
Just barely decode it.
