Toshiba To Halt 16M DRAM Output By April '99 TOKYO (Nikkei)-Toshiba Corp. will stop producing 16-megabit DRAM chips by April 1999, more than one year earlier than scheduled, company officials said. Profitability of 16M DRAMs has deteriorated following a plunge in memory prices. The company has begun to notify sales agents and large-lot users of its plan to complete the production halt by April 1999. The spot price of a benchmark 16M DRAM currently stands at $3.30 on overseas markets, down about 60% from a year ago. Toshiba does not expect 16M DRAM prices to recover visibly over the near term as Taiwanese producers are expected to increase output. The company hopes that halting output will help chip users to shift to more profitable 64M DRAMs. Toshiba currently produces 7 million 16M DRAMs a month, and holds a 15% share of the domestic market. The company will be the first major Japanese semiconductor maker to stop producing the chip.
