a brief followup for the morbidly curious...

after enduring the tedium of hours on the phone with various customer service folks (AOL, Fidelity, etc.) fiddling with numerous browser settings without success, Dad brought the box back to me. We connected via cable and were able to access his Fidelity site routinely. Convinced we had isolated the problem to AOL, dialed up and again connected successfully to all sites.

Returning to his home, we determined that his (ten year old)uninterruptible power supply was faulty. He's back in business!
